Last year, Microsoft signed an exclusive agreement with CyanogenMod to include Cortana across the custom ROM.
Today, we’re seeing that deal come to fruition. Cyanogen OS 12.1.1 is now rolling out to the OnePlus One – and it’s got Cortana integration.
This is the first version of Cyanogen OS with support for Microsoft Cortana baked right into it.
Yes, Cortana is available on other Android devices, but it feels like more of a third-party app than a built-in feature. In fact, Microsoft just recently removed Cortana’s “always listening” feature from its Android app – which means you can’t just say “Hey Cortana” to open the app at any time. You have to specifically open it yourself.
With that in mind, the OnePlus One version of Cortana comes with some cool features, like:
-Hey Cortana hot word to activate the app at any time
-Support for alarms, quiet mode, and settings toggles using your voice
-Deep integration with CyanogenMod that will “allow Cortana to do more things in the future too”
The version of Cortana included in the current update is fairly basic, but both Microsoft and CyanogenMod have big plans for the future that should introduce plenty of cool features over the coming months.
How to Install the New Update
The latest Cyanogen OS 12.1.1 update is available in the system menu.
Keep in mind that because this is Cyanogen 12, it’s still officially a Lollipop build and it is not Marshmallow.
Another restriction is that Cortana is only available in the United States for now.
There’s no way to install the new Cyanogen OS update without installing Cortana. However, you can easily remove Cortana after the update by uninstalling it – which is useful if you find her voice annoying.
