The HTC Evo was one of the smartphones released during the peak of the Android rooting community. As a result it has one of the largest selection of custom ROMS and kernels available. A lot of the newly released Android smartphones have very little custom ROM support so if you want to get into the ROM community there is no better smartphone to start with than the HTC Evo. Another great thing about the HTC Evo is that it can now be purchased at an incredibly low price.
With a small 4.3 inch 480 x 800 resolution display, a measly 512MB of RAM and a single core 1GHz processor, the 2010 model of the HTC Evo isn’t ever going to live up to the task of being your daily Android smartphone, but if you’d like a hobby device or something to use as a back up, rooting is the only way to get the absolute most out of the device. Currently the stock OS and the majority of HTC Evo ROMS use Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread so your functionality and app range will be limited. However, if you do root the HTC Evo, the MIUI.us and MazWoz ICS ROM both use Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and this will offer a big jump in functionality and Android OS appearance. Upgrading to the MazWoz ICS ROM will offer better performance on YouTube, Chrome, the camera app and even in the SMS app so if you’re fed up with slow performance with the stock HTC Evo ROM then rooting your device and upgrading to the MazWoz could be a great option.
There are also plenty of other great tools and applications available to improve the performance of the HTC Evo and most of these can be found within the XDA and MoDaCo Android developer forums. If you’re looking for specific root-only apps you will also be able to find a large selection of them within the Google Play Store.
Let’s be honest, with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, 512MB of RAM and a single core processor, the HTC Evo looks dull and it’s performance is terrible. When put up against the current hardware demands from present day applications there is no way that the HTC Evo can work without faults and poor performance. However, you can boost the performance of the HTC Evo, tweak it to give it a more appealing user interface and download more useful utility apps to make it so that using the smartphone is no longer a terrible pain in the neck. To do that, you’ll first need to root the device and our One Click Root software offers the best option for quick root access.
