In 2014, LG was one of the top Android manufacturers. The flagship for LG in 2014 was the LG G3 and thanks to the success of this flagship, LG managed to make a great name for themselves as an Android manufacturer worth keeping an eye on. The LG G2 was also a successful smartphone but the LG G3 took everything that the G2 did right and improved upon it, then did even more. The biggest innovation on the LG G3 was the inclusion of the back cover physical buttons. By placing the physical buttons such as the on/off button and the volume rocker on the back of the handset, it became easier for those with smaller hands to operate the smartphone whilst using the smartphone one-handed.

Having the back buttons on the LG G3 was useful because sometimes a 5.5 inch display is just a little too large for quick one-handed use. The display on the LG G3 had a very impressive resolution of 1440 x 2560, making it one of the first smartphones to adopt a 2K display. Since then, many other manufacturers, including Sony and Samsung, have used 2K displays on their flagship smartphones. The rest of the hardware on the LG G3 was just as impressive. The 13 megapixel camera on the G3 was touted as one of the best smartphone cameras in 2014 thanks to it’s high resolution and optical image stabilization. On the inside the LG G3 rocks the Snapdragon 801 SoC and either 2GB or 3GB of RAM. The Snapdragon 801 comes with a powerful 2.5GHz quad core processor and an Adreno 330 GPU. As for internal storage, the LG G3 has either 16GB or 32GB of memory but storage can be increased externally via the included microSD card slot.

The hardware on the LG G3 is great admittedly, but the software was also extra special. Whilst LG still took a lot of inspiration from Samsung’s TouchWiz for many of the LG UX applications, there were a few unique features that LG had created themselves. One of LG’s unique features is Dual Window – with this, LG G3 owners can display two apps on their display at the same time. The LG G3 also had a useful app called Knock On which allowed users to turn their display on by tapping it twice.
