When launched in September 2014, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha was a bit of a wildcard from Samsung. In the past Samsung has always stuck to plastic build designs for their smartphones but the Galaxy Alpha is made out of metal in a similar fashion to the iPhone. In fact many critics would have you believe that the Galaxy Alpha is a direct competitor to the iPhone, as opposed to the Galaxy S range that Samsung sells as it’s flagship each year. Despite the metallic housing and different build design, the Galaxy Alpha has pretty similar specifications as the Galaxy S5. On the outside, the Galaxy Alpha has a 4.7 inch 720 x 1280 display and a 12 megapixel camera. Going on into the interior, the Alpha has a 1,860mAh battery capacity, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and the Exynos 5430 Octa chipset. As the name suggests, the 5430 comes with an octa core CPU (one 1.8GHz quad core and one 1.3GHz quad core.) The Galaxy Alpha also comes packed with a Mali-T628 MP6. Following a similar trend for 2014, the Alpha does not have space for a microSD card slot, meaning that the 32GB of internal memory will have to last the smartphone’s lifetime, unless a micro USB storage adapter is purchased.

When it comes to software, the Galaxy Alpha features the same redesigned TouchWiz UX that Samsung launched alongside the Galaxy S5. Whilst not as finetuned as TouchWiz on the S6, the Alpha has one of the more refined versions of TouchWiz, making it a great choice for those who care about the software they are using. With the included hardware, such as the octa core processor, running the TouchWiz UX isn’t a problem either.
