The Samsung Galaxy S. The beginning of a legendary smartphone lineup. Whilst the Galaxy S wasn’t that impressive, it’s considered an icon today because it was the first of many very popular Android flagship smartphones from Samsung. The Samsung Galaxy S did little to stray from the crowd when it launched in 2010, but it had enough hardware to compete with other options available at the time. With a 4 inch 480 x 800 resolution Super AMOLED display, there Samsung Galaxy S had one of the best displays on the market at the time. The 5 megapixel camera was also considered the creme of the crop in 2010, and it was packaged with a secondary front facing VGA camera as well. These days the hardware in the Galaxy S is far from impressive – any new smartphone under $100 could outperform the original Galaxy S but if you’ve got it lying around it can still just about be used as a backup device. The internal hardware of the Galaxy S includes a 1.0 GHz single core Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor, a PowerVR SGX540 GPU, 512MB of RAM and either 8GB or 16GB of internal storage. The Samsung Galaxy S also has a 1,500mAh battery and support for up to an additional 32GB of external storage via the microSD card slot.
When it comes to the software side of things, the Samsung Galaxy S comes with Android 2.1 Eclair out of the box but an official update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread is available. On top of the Android operating system, Samsung has used the TouchWiz 3.0 UX on the Samsung Galaxy S. Like mentioned before, Samsung’s UX in 2010 didn’t do much to separate itself from the crowd like the latest TouchWiz overlays do, but it did tweak the UI a little and add a few snippets of extra functionality to the device.
