For a cheap tablet, you can’t go wrong with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0. The hardware in the Galaxy Tab is outdated by today’s standards and the display quality is far from perfect but with a low second hand price online, if you need a tablet for simple tasks or web browsing this device could be a great choice. When the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 released in 2013, it was considered an ‘okay’ device. At the time, this was a pretty poor rating for a Samsung product and the cause of it was because Samsung just didn’t put enough hardware into it to give it the performance it needed. With a strange, unreliable chipset and limited processing power, it was no wonder why the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 couldn’t keep up with the overloaded Samsung TouchWiz UX.
If you own the Samsung Galaxy Tab or are planning to purchase one, we would highly recommend that you root the tablet. Once you are rooted, you will be able to get rid of TouchWiz by installing a custom ROM and by doing so you’ll be able to increase the performance of the tablet significantly. Like mentioned above, the biggest issue with the Tab 3 7.0 was the poor performance when browsing the interface and a change to a new lightweight ROM will be able to fix this.
With that being said, the hardware in the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 isn’t going to do wonders even if you do drop the TouchWiz UX. The Tab 3 7.0 is powered by a Marvell PXA986 chipset. Heard that name before? If you haven’t, it’s no surprise. The Galaxy Tab benchmarks weren’t great, even for a device that has a dual core 1.2GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. There are a couple of plus sides to the hardware in the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0. Firstly the device has a large 4,000mAh battery capacity which will last a significant time on a 7 inch display. The device also supports microSD cards of up to 64GB which will help to boost the memory. Without an SD card you’ll be stuck with either 8GB or 16GB of storage space, depending on which version is picked up. However, with the heavy TouchWiz UX and Android Jelly Bean, you’re left with around 10GB of free space on the 16GB version.
